Leath to Leave ISU for Auburn Post

Auburn University is hiring Iowa State president Steven Leath as its new president.

Sources told the Opelika-Auburn News that Leath is a finalist being considered to become the next president of Auburn University in Alabama. The search for the new leader at Auburn is now underway, according to Auburn's website.

Dr. Leath has been the President at Iowa State since 2012 according to his bio. He has now reimbursed the university for the flights.

The 14 member presidential search committee voted unanimously to name Leath following a six-month national search.

Iowa State University will have to begin the search for a new president.

Leath has published nearly 100 scientific articles in his career, mainly on plant disease, pathology and breeding, according to his official Iowa State biography. He's faced criticism recently for flying a university plane for personal use.

Others agreed with the support for Leath.

"This is a great day for Auburn", said trustee Raymond Harbert, who chaired the search committee.

"We found an accomplished leader through an inclusive search process with all campus constituencies represented", said Larry Teeter in a university-released statement.

As for the departing president, who has held the university's top position since 2007, Gogue will remain at Auburn teaching a higher education administration course and conducting special projects. When first called about this opportunity, I responded truthfully, as I always had done since my arrival in Iowa, by saying, "I love Iowa State, and the Iowa State students, faculty, staff and Cyclone family are wonderful; I am not looking to leave".

"The contribution Jay and Susie Gogue made to Auburn is immeasurable", said McCrary. However, after much thought, Janet and I chose to look at the opportunity at Auburn and realized the opportunity was one we could not pass up.
