'American Crime Story' Finds Its Donatella Versace in Penelope Cruz

After rumors that Lady Gaga would be playing the role, today it was revealed that Spanish actress Penélope Cruz is heading to TV as a series regular, playing Donatella Versace, on the next season of FX's "Versace: American Crime Story". Cruz will play Donatella Versace, Gianni's sister who took over the Versace brand after his death.

According to reports, the Vicky Cristina Barcelona star is set to play the lead role in Versace: American Crime Story! The season will be based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. His killer, Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), committed suicide eight days later as Miami Dade police were on the verge of capturing the serial killer behind five slayings. We know that personally, we're far more intrigued by the Versace story than we are Katrina: American Crime Story, which is meant to be season 2. The second season, which will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina will alternate filming with Versace and also air in 2018.

The first series, The People V OJ Simpson, aired previous year and picked up accolades at the Golden Globes and the Emmys. "She's a friend. But she's very busy this next year - she's doing Super Bowl and then she's doing A Star Is Born and I believe that she's going on tour", said Murphy. The pop icon won a Golden Globe for her performance on Murphy's other wildly popular FX series, American Horror Story: Hotel. In 2016, she finished production on Escobar and Murder on the Orient Express. It will begin filming in April and will air sometime in 2018.

She has also been a muse for Pedro Almodovar, starring in some of his best work like 2006's Volver.
