Indian doctors confirm 'world's heaviest woman' has lost 100kg

Indian doctors said Thursday that an Egyptian who is believed to be the world's heaviest woman had successfully undergone weight-loss surgery after losing over 100 kilograms (220 pounds).

Eman has been in hospital since early February when she was moved out of her home for the first time in 25 years by removing the wall from her room, and a crane to lift her out of her bed. She was then flown in a cargo plane to India.

"Eman was operated successfully by sleeve laparoscopic gastrectomy on March 7, 2017 at the Saifee Hospital in Bombay, according to a statement". The 36-year-old is now on a oral fluids and accepting them well. "The future course of action for the medical team working on her will be to correct all her associated medical problems, to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible", it added.

Since her arrival in Mumbai, Eman has already lost over 100 kg and presents a different picture - the surgery will help her shed more weight.

The Egyptian is still believed to be the world's heaviest woman ahead of American Pauline Potter who the Guinness Book of World Records recorded at 293 kilos in July past year.

Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, the bariatric surgeon treating Eman, said: 'We thought she would lose around 50kg, but we are surprised to observe that she has lost more than 100kg.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese and carrying an excessive amount of body fat.

Despite her weight loss, the Egyptian would still be the biggest woman in the world.

At birth she weighed 11 pounds at birth and doctors diagnosed her with elephantiasis - a condition in which limbs or other body parts swell drastically due to a parasitic infection, her family said. "We had to remove her gallbladder as well, as she had 15 stones", he said. At the age of 11, she suffered a stroke and was left bedridden.
