Trump Taps Former US Atty Acosta For Labor Secretary

He also would mark the first Hispanic cabinet member in this administration, joining Ben Carson and Elaine Chao on "Team Diversity" for Trump.

His withdrawal creates another headache for an administration that just fired scandal-plagued national security adviser Mike Flynn and is still struggling to key to fill crucial positions including White House communications director.

Puzder's withdrawal had been widely expected to occur sometime within the next 24 hours, and has now been confirmed by both Fox Business Network and NBC News. "Most recently, Dean Acosta served as the U.S. Attorney for Southern District of Florida, and was the longest serving U.S. Attorney in the District since the 1970s".

In July 2009, he became a dean at Florida International University's law school.

Trump's announcement came on a day when senators were supposed to be grilling his first choice for the job, fast-food chief executive Andrew Puzder.

Having gone through multiple vettings by the U.S. Senate, it is also unlikely that there are surprises in his background that could derail a second Labor Department nomination.

Speaking to reporters at a separate event at the White House earlier on Thursday, Trump said he was nominating a man to the post but gave no other details. He's been under fire for remarks on women and people who work for his restaurants.

During one of his confirmation hearings, Puzder confirmed that he and his wife had employed an undocumented housekeeper for years. "It's time for President Trump to stop looking out for his billionaire buddies, and name a Secretary of Labor who will stand up for workers".

"I think he'll be a tremendous Secretary of Labor", Trump said.

Acosta, the only son of Cuban immigrants, gradually reconnected with Miami and cultivated strong relationships in the legal and law enforcement community to build up the US attorney's office in his image.
