Trump blasts media, insists team running 'like fine-tuned machine'

Less than one month into his presidency, US President Donald Trump appeared to revert back into campaign mode and scolded the US media during his first solo press conference as president on Thursday.

"I'm making this presentation directly to the American people with the media present - which is an honor to have you this morning - because many of our nation's reporters and folks will not tell you the truth", Trump said.

"I turn on the T.V., open the newspapers, and I see stories of chaos". "This administration is running like a fine- tuned machine".

Trump's criticism of the media has grown amid reports that members of his administration had associations or communications with the Russian government.

He joked that the reporter, who is black, should set up the meeting and said, "are they friends of yours?"

According to a Rasmussen poll, Trump's approval rating sits at 55%.

On leaks/fake news: "The leaks are real, but the news is fake".

Trump claimed that he had "inherited a mess" from President Barack Obama and accused the media of trying to distort the steps his administration has taken to address national security and law enforcement concerns.

"It's very important to me" to unite the country, Trump said.

He pledged to announce a new order which would be "very much tailored to what I consider to be a very bad decision".

He said the story should not be when, how or what his inner circle was communicating with Russian representatives but the leaks of classified information by the US intelligence community to the news media. "People are starting to focus on the illegal giving out classified information".
