Mitsubishi confirms 'Eclipse Cross' as new compact SUV

Mitsubishi is keen to highlight the Eclipse Cross is "coupe-like" with "highly chamfered contours" and a "distinctive V-line in the rear quarter".

In a short statement, Mitsubishi said: "Eclipse derives its name from the MMC's popular specialty coupe model sold in the USA from 1989, while Cross is short for crossover". It was unfortunately discontinued back in 2012.

Mitsubishi has revealed that its upcoming compact crossover will be called Eclipse Cross. Aside from the brand's three diamond star, the only thing it appears to share with the now-vintage Eclipse sporty coupe is its name.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is dead; long live the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. The Eclipse Cross will supposedly sport a roof spoiler as well as a one-piece taillight.

The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross addresses these shortcomings, as its design is clearly derived from the striking 2013 XR-PHEV concept below, while its price should equal or undercut the Qashqai et al.

Mitsubishi has used the word Eclipse as a name before, but not previously for an SUV.

The 87 Geneva International Motor Show is just a month away and auto enthusiasts are already excited and can't wait for the latest vehicle models and concept cars.

Mitsubishi has previously confirmed the new model will sit alongside the ASX compact SUV and the Outlander mid-size SUV, while not specifying whether it will be smaller or larger than either.
