Mark Gottfried's job at NC State in jeopardy

Amid reports about the future of Mark Gottfried's employment, the NC State athletics department issued a statement emphasizing that Gottfried will remain the head coach of the NC State basketball team this season.

The Wolfpack has lost five ACC games by at least 20 points this season, including a 51-point "disaster", as Gottfried called it, 107-56 at UNC on January 8.

Gottfried is now 122-82 in his time at NC State- 47-55 in ACC play. The Wolfpack lost 97-73 at home to the 10th-ranked Tar Heels on Tuesday to fall to 14-13 overall and 3-11 in ACC play.

The Wolfpack went 16-17 last season and missed the NCAA tournament under Gottfried's guidance, and they appear headed for a similar fate this year. "State is a special place and I appreciate the opportunity to finish the remainder of the season".

"It has been a privilege to serve as head coach of N.C. State, and I'm proud of what we have accomplished during my time here", Gottfried said in a statement Thursday. "N.C".

Athletic director Debbie Yow announced Thursday that Gottfriend will not return as coach for the 2017-18 season with N.C. State's only hope of reaching the NCAA Tournament being a miraculous run to the ACC tournament title.

According to Andy Katz of ESPN, NCSU owes Gottfried an estimated $2.28 million in buyout money over the next three years. Since then, the Wolfpack have sprinkled in three wins, including a one-off against Duke before it made a decision to actually play basketball again. Gottfried will finish out the season. The Wolfpack are among the worst units in all of college basketball, ranking 328th in points allowed per game at 80.5, per SportsReference. N.C. State hosts No. 25 Notre Dame on Saturday.
