Senate Democrats speak for 24 hours against Betsy DeVos

If you cannot bring yourself to vote against this nominee, is there anyone President Trump could nominate for any position that you could vote against? Vice President Mike Pence cast an historic, tie-breaking vote to confirm the West Michigan native.

For the sake of our children, let's do our job.

"She's made it very clear that she does not feel that charter schools or parochial schools need to have the same accountability if they received federal dollars", McBride-Culver says.

"What I think is happening right now is something that's going to hurt the communities of color and, specifically, communities that are undocumented and immigrant", local teacher Excy Guardado said.

All 46 Democratic senators and two independent senators voted against DeVos, a billionaire mega-donor to Republican causes and a staunch advocate for charter schools and school choice.

Public schools face an uncertain future after Betsy DeVos' contentious confirmation as U.S. Secretary of Education.

"This nomination is because of big money, private companies taking over our kid's education, and that's what scares me", Wilson says.

"This really wasn't a partisan issue", said Andrea Jenkins, a teacher at Jerry "Pop" Williams Elementary School in Farmington.

Reed added that his constituents demanded someone familiar with the public school system.

What to expect: DeVos, a Republican, has faced stiff opposition leading up to the final vote.

Kilby-Chesley says her organization is working with others within the National Education Association to create a watchdog group and a plan to resist DeVos's policies. I've heard from an overwhelming number of MI families who have shared their strong concerns about her long record of pushing policies that have seriously undermined public education in MI and failed our children.
